Would you like to introduce your band ?
We are Altered Sky ! We’re a rock band based in Glasgow, Scotland. The band is Ana (vocals), Amy (drums), Ross (bass) and Rich (guitar). Between the four of us, we have a very wide range of influences: from video game music to pop-punk and all sorts of genres in-between. As well as being inspired by the bands we grew up listening to, we’re inspired every day by our growing community of fans. They are so supportive and incredibly enthusiastic: it’s like having an extra member of the team !
Why did you choose « Altered Sky » as your band name ?
We chose the name Altered Sky simply because we liked the way it sounded. The meaning of the name has grown over time to represent the family we have built : band members, our management and especially our fans ; the name connects us all together.
What have been the most important meetings and events since the beginning of your career ?
One of the most important meetings is probably when we met Jay (now our manager) for the first time. He used to work as a gig promoter and had booked us to play a show in Glasgow supporting two other British bands : Reachback and My Favourite Runner Up. We got on with him brilliantly. It was great to meet someone so passionate about putting on shows. The night was a great success and we agreed to work together again. He’s now our manager and is still full of the same energy and enthusiasm : it’s great having him on our side !
You released two EPs : In This World (2011) and Stop And Live (2014).
Can you talk about your evolution since you’ve released them ?
Looking back there has been a definite progression from our earliest EP In This World to Stop And Live, released last year. The songwriting is more mature and the tracks sound « bigger » thanks to working with producer Romesh Dodangoda. He has worked with some amazing artists in the past and it was a great opportunity for us to be able to work with him. He made us feel very comfortable and relaxed in the studio, but still managed to get the best possible performances from each of us. We went back to him in late 2014 to work on our upcoming debut full length album.
What do you think of today’s music industry ?
If you had the power to change anything about it, would you do something ?
Just now is a really exciting time to be making music : for the first time it is possible to reach people all over the world just by uploading music to the internet. We have fans all over the world, not just in the UK who have discovered our music and enjoy it. This would not have been possible ten years ago. With so much choice and so many things to do online, a big challenge today is with the live music scene. It really does seem that not as many people go out at the weekend to live shows any more. There are so many great small venues which have been forced to close recently. If we could change anything it would be to remind people that a live show doesn’t have to be in a massive arena : some of the best, most exciting shows happen in the smallest venues !
Is there a musician and/or a record that made you want to become musicians yourselves ?
Hearing the live album Rock In Rio by Iron Maiden for the first time !
